Hernias can cause discomfort, pain, and complications if left untreated. At Louisville Hernia & General Surgery, we specialize in advanced hernia repair, including minimally invasive techniques and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Our goal is to restore strength, function, and comfort for our patients in Louisville, KY, and surrounding areas.
What Is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. This condition can cause pain, a visible bulge, and, in some cases, serious complications if untreated.

Common Types of Hernias We Treat:
Inguinal Hernia
- Most common type, especially in men.
- Occurs when part of the intestine or fatty tissue protrudes through the lower abdominal wall or into the inguinal canal in the groin.
Femoral Hernia
- More common in women, especially older adults.
- Happens when part of the intestine pushes into the femoral canal, near the thigh.
Umbilical Hernia
- Occurs when intestine or fatty tissue bulges through the abdominal wall near the belly button (umbilicus).
- Common in infants and adults.
Epigastric or Ventral Hernia
- Occurs when intestine or fatty tissue bulges through the abdominal wall above or below the belly button (umbilicus).
- Common in infants but can also affect adults.
Incisional Hernia
- Occurs at the site of a previous surgical incision, where the wall and/or muscle has weakened.
- These can be small or can span the entire length of the incision.
Epigastric Hernia
- Forms between the belly button and the lower ribcage due to a weakness in the abdominal wall.
Spigelian Hernia
- Rare type of hernia occurring along the edge of the rectus abdominis muscle.
- These can be difficult to feel from the outside but can be seen on CT scans.
Obturator Hernia
- Uncommon but mostly found in older women.
- Occurs when part of the intestine pushes through the obturator foramen in the pelvis.
Flank/Lumbar Hernia
- Uncommon but found on the lateral to back area of the core.
- Occurs when part of the intestine pushes through the wall of the core or even through the diaphragm.
- Can happen after surgery on the spine or kidney.
Signs & Symptoms of a Hernia
If you experience any of the following symptoms, a consultation with a hernia specialist is recommended:
- A visible bulge or swelling in the abdomen or groin
- Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting, coughing, or standing for long periods
- A sensation of pressure or weakness at the hernia site
- Nausea, vomiting, or bowel obstruction in severe cases
How We Diagnose Hernias
At Louisville Hernia & General Surgery, we use a combination of:
- Physical Examination: Identifying bulges or areas of weakness.
- Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI to confirm diagnosis and determine severity.
- Patient History Review: Understanding symptoms, risk factors, and lifestyle considerations.

Hernia Surgery & Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
Hernia repair is performed using one of the following techniques:
Laparoscopic or Robotic Hernia Repair
- Minimally Invasive surgery repair
- Small incisions with a camera-assisted approach.
- Faster recovery and reduced postoperative pain.
- Often used for inguinal, ventral, and umbilical hernias.
Open Hernia Repair
- A traditional surgical approach for complex or large hernias.
- Reinforcement with sutures or surgical mesh to strengthen the area.
Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
- Used for complex or recurrent hernias.
- Restores strength and function to the abdominal muscles.
- Involves repositioning tissue and using advanced mesh techniques for long-term stability.
Recovery & Aftercare
Most patients experience:
- Minimally invasive recovery: Return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks for laparoscopic or Robotic surgery.
- Open surgery recovery: Full recovery may take 6-8 weeks with gradual resumption of activities.
- Post-op guidelines: Avoid heavy lifting, monitor the surgical site, and attend follow-up visits.
